Cold Bonding - Belzona's Cold Bonding approach to Corrosion Protection

Belzona Technosol Limited has demonstrated their experience in corrosion protection at a major chemical manufacturer in the UK. Belzona's contract services division, were recently contacted by a client looking for a repair solution for their badly corroded absorber throat.

After a joint inspection with the client it was discovered that the bubbler throat on the absorber had developed a number of holes within the vessel compartment due to substrate erosion/corrosion. Belzona Technosol Limited proposed to utilize a series of steel plates to completely encapsulate the affected areas followed by a coat of Belzona 1391 (Ceramic HT) to protect from further attack.

The absorber throat along with 16 handleable sections of pre-formed mild steel plate were grit blasted to obtain the correct profile allowing optimum adhesion of the Belzona product. The steel plates where then cold bonded into place using Belzona 1121 (Super XL Metal) a paste grade product which provides extended working life. Using Belzona products to bond offers increased safety within confined spaces as no hot work is involved.

Once the Belzona product had cured, the entire repair area was over-coated using Belzona 1391 (Ceramic HT) to prevent further damage to the absorber throat. This product was selected as it exhibits excellent erosion-corrosion resistance at elevated temperatures.

The application was completed within 3 days providing the client with minimum downtime and disruption to the facility.
