Belzona Refurbish a Heat Exchanger on a Luxury Cruise Liner

Belzona Technosol Limited recently competed an application on a corroded heat exchanger onboard a luxury cruise ship. Isolated pitting was found in the area where the separation bar sits against the tube face and on the division plate along with the entire tube face. Belzona was able to provide a full refurbishment solution which included repairs to the corroded areas and protection from future deterioration.

The product selected for the initial repairs was Belzona 1121 (Super XL-Metal), a two component paste grade material based on a silicon steel reinforced polymer system. Application Technicians of Belzona Technosol Limited protected the tube bores with cork bungs then blasted the tube face and separation bar to the required surface preparation standard. The corks then acted as a datum for the rebuild works.

Belzona 1121 (Super XL-Metal) was then applied to the prepared areas in three layers, ensuring there was no air trapped within the material. Once cured, the repair area was sanded smooth and level with the cork/tube faces and re-skimmed where needed.

Two coats of Belzona 1321 (Ceramic S-Metal) were then applied by hand to both the tube face and the separation bar and left to cure. Belzona 1321 (Ceramic S-Metal) was selected as the most effective product to provide future protection to the heat exchanger as it provides excellent protection to metal surfaces subject to erosion-corrosion. Additionally, the solvent free solution can be applied with no specialist tools which provided great benefit to the client due to the location of the heat exchanger on board the cruise liner.

Using a compressed air jet from the opposite end of the tube face, each cork was ejected.
